Another difference is that Session has an audio (and video?) conferencing service in beta right now, but it's not anonymous for the moment. Once that one rolls out, things might rock. There's Jami, but the only true decentralized (working) solutions i know of is cwtch and now - maybe - speek ! I do monitor another promising project, although it's long in the making, called Safenet. Unfortunately, there's not that many of them. Anyways, that plus the fact it's not totally open source was the signal for me to jump from the train and look for other alternatives. I ranted about that quite a while ago on their subreddit and never got a satisfactory answer to the (real) why of that. I do know (from their whitepaper) that it's a derivative from the Signal protocol, but they actually downgraded the native 256 bits encryption of Signal to a 128 bits one, arguing user friendlyness. This isn't totally open source, so whatever they say, you still have to take their word for it.

I see that Ricochet was a way to go but it has no updates for years now and I am not sure it is okay to use today, additionally I need an Android client to be always online but Ricochet has. anonymizing by passing through several hops before reaching the destination, BUT, it doesn't use the Tor network for that, but their own cluster of servers (individuals hosting an Oxen server). Don't know how popular but: Pidgin (OTR), RetroShare, Jami, Tox. Basically, Session uses the same logic as Tor, i.e. Not speaking for the devs here, just as an ex-session user. We also already have versions in the Mac Store, Windows Store and on AppImageHub and we also want to release versions for Android and iOS. We are also working on multiple new features like: Emoji support, better file sharing and image sharing, multiple identities, backing up identities, password protection and much more is planned. The old Ricochet was not very attractive for most users and we think that it is important to onboard as many people as possible, because privacy becomes a bigger topic everyday (banning of E2E encryption, client side banning, etc.). Our main goal is to create a user friendly messenger based on Ricochet. The messenger is of course open-source and available on GitHub. This could mean toolbars or system modifications. We are developing a privacy messenger that is based on the good old Ricochet messenger ( (software)). Similar to TorChat, but for mobile, with a simpler protocol, without keeping. Though this program tested positive for virus tests, some people don't view it as a virus or malware.
TORCHAT FOR ANDROID SOFTWARE
As an open source project, you are free to view the source code and distribute this software application freely. TorChat 0.9.9.553 is available to all software users as a free download for Windows. This download is licensed as freeware for the Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) operating system on a laptop or desktop PC from instant messaging software without restrictions. TorChat can hide your true IP address, circumvent state censorship and text chat. This is actually the Windows version, but the developer also provides a version for Linux. This decentralized network gives you high anonymity and being portal, does not leave any traces on your system. The TorChat network is peer-to-peer with a decentralized design, similar to Gnutella.
